Hi, I'm Marjolein, a ceramic artist and teacher based in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands.

I first started working with clay because I was fascinated by the material. Clay felt almost magical to me. Something organic, endlessly reusable until it is fired. Then it becomes fixed. Strong. With the right care, something that can last for generations.

Over the years, that fascination has only grown. Somewhere along the way, I found grounding in the process and a way of working that felt natural to me.

Working with clay requires endurance, consistency, clarity and attention. It asks you to slow down, repeat a process many times and accept that every stage takes the time it needs.

The pottery wheel

Most of my work begins on the pottery wheel. Each piece is wheel-thrown and shaped by hand over multiple stages, allowing its form to develop gradually.

I enjoy the rhythm of making: centering, throwing, trimming, glazing and firing. Every step contributes to the final piece.

Rather than aiming for perfection, I focus on creating ceramics that feel balanced, functional and lasting.

Functional ceramics

I create handmade functional ceramics designed to be used every day.

I love making objects with care and attention. Pieces that quietly become part of daily life. Your first coffee in the morning. A meal shared at the table. A warm cup of tea at the end of the day.

These are the moments I think about while making. The objects we use every day often become part of our routines without us noticing. I hope my work encourages a small pause and a greater appreciation for those everyday rituals.

Teaching ceramics

Alongside my studio practice, I teach ceramics to both beginners and more experienced makers.

Having learned from a variety of teachers throughout the years, I now teach in a ceramics studio in Den Haag. It is a place that played an important role in my own development as a maker, which makes it especially meaningful to share my knowledge there today.
